Happy last Thursday of May! Tech leaders are always asking for quick/easy resources to help drive performance and increase effectiveness across their orgs. “The Pursuit” is dedicating the last week of the month to delivering the best resources out there. This month, I’m focusing on the importance of maintaining a strong head-space as an org leader in tech. Here's my May favorite in under 2 minutes…
What tech leaders should be reading this month: “The Let Them Theory” by Mel Robbins.
Why “The Let Them Theory” is compelling: You know me – I love the self-help section (Purple Room!) at Powell’s Books. This latest read from the host of “The Mel Robbins Podcast” is a perfect blend of self-help reminders and pragmatic tips to ensure that you’re prioritizing your experience/perspective over everything. Her theory is just as the title reads: “LetThem” (others) do what they’re going to do (and don’t get caught-up in trying to control it). This includes your family, co-workers, managers, strangers, etc. But what I love even more is what she highlights in the second half of the book: The “Let Me” counter – pushing the reader to also think about how they’re going to react to challenging situations (or people). This is especially applicable to tech leaders who are driving organizational impact (through others) – manage to the outcome and be super-thoughtful how you’re going to raise-the-bar and show support/devotion to the team. It’s a perfect “before-bed”read, too (another favorite)!
Simple “Go-Do’s” for tech leaders/performers: Take a few seconds and:
· Reserve “The Let Them Theory” from your local library or download the book/audio book.
· Let your team know you’re reading this and incorporate best practices into (1) how you manage by outcome instead of control and (2) your reaction(s) in your pursuit of excellence and culture
Value Add – Additional ways to show-up as a leader: There’s also a great “work”specific resource at the conclusion of the book by David Gerbitz, a friend, mentor, and fellow coach: The LetThem Leadership Guide. Check-out his best practices to incorporate the “Let Them” and “Let Me” theories into your organization!
